The Huron River Labrador
Retriever Club was established in 1979, in Southeastern
Michigan by a group of Labrador Retriever owners who shared
a common interest in the breed. In the club’s early
years membership included a small group of folks. Today,
our membership has grown from a small group to many members
strong.
The club, governed by officers and a board of directors
who are elected yearly by the membership, holds monthly
membership and board meetings, and supports several activities
throughout the year. The HRLRC strives to promote the versatility
of the Labrador Retriever by promoting a learning environment
for its members and encouraging participation in dog related
events such as the field, show ring, obedience and agility
trials, tracking tests, service dogs, working/companion
dog events and as wonderful pets.
The HRLRC holds several events throughout the year that
bring Labrador lovers from near and far to share in some
fun. We hold our annual Specialty conformation show the
last Friday in September. A fun match, usually held in conjunction
with our July picnic, is geared towards helping handlers
and dogs gain experience in the obedience and show rings.
Field training classes are sometimes held in the spring
providing an opportunity to get a head start for the upcoming
Fall hunting season.
The Club provides informational
handouts at several shows and other dog-related events in
Michigan to help educate the public about the Labrador Retriever.
Educational materials include information about the Labrador
Retriever Breed Standard, Considerations Before You Buy
a Labrador, What Makes a Responsible Breeder, How to Pick
a Puppy, and more. This same information is available on
this website under the Labrador Info/Links tab.
The HRLRC members participate
in Labrador Rescue and Placement efforts. Members provide
assistance in placing Labradors directly from the current
owner to a new owner without the dog having to go into a
shelter. We try to keep as many Labradors in a home environment
as possible. Our program is run completely by HRLRC volunteers.
The Huron River Labrador
Retriever Club members are dedicated in making our club
the best club around. Our ability to provide a learning
environment and total enjoyment for Labrador enthusiasts
is evident in the success stories of our members and club.
